The Power of Three

As educators, it's our job to present information that can be understood easily.

Three is a powerful educational number.

When large levels of information can be reduced into "three containers", the ability to transfer what we know to others becomes palatable, patterned, and memorable.

The Power of Three Explained

I've coached for decades and never realized (until recently) how much I use this number for self-improvement and coaching others.  Let's explore:

Perception

Our survival, behavior, experiences, actions, interactions , and ability to understand things are shaped by our perception.  Much of perception is influenced by our pattern recognition.  Three is the smallest number of items needed to establish a pattern - making it the easiest way to organize, present, understand, and memorize complex principles.

Time

Without time... there would be no way to quantify change.  Change is how we measure growth.  Measurements (progress) are fundamentally tied to time... and time is often organized into "three":  Past, present, future.  Beginning, middle, ending. Morning, afternoon, evening.  Etc.  And of course... beginner, intermediate, and advanced.

Growth measurement goes overlooked by far too many coaching "professionals".  Growth creates value.  What is the measured value that you are paying for?

What gets measured, gets accomplished (#wgmga).

Development

I develop three areas in each athlete:

Body: How you move.   The physical engine of pitching.   Body is where efficiency is either built or lost.  Fundamentals, competitive abilities, and athleticism.

Mind: How you think.   The cognitive and awareness layer of pitching — observation, decision-making, focus, and adaptability.

For younger pitchers, "mind" is the awareness of what they're doing.  For advanced, it's the awareness of what’s happening in the game and how to respond.

Spirit: Why we pitch.  It’s the motivational root — identity, belief, grit, joy, and purpose.  Spirit is why you step into the circle.   It's the anchor that turns mechanics and awareness into freedom.

As a coach, I create an environment that allows for evolution and development in all three areas.  This requisite of means is shaped to the student-athletes desired destination.

Summary

Greatness is built on simplicity.   The Power of Three is my framework for unlocking elite performance — reducing the clutter, sharpening focus, and amplifying results.  In all areas of life, a small number of factors create the majority of results.  We will reduce to what truly matters - discovering which abilities are most natural, most trainable, and most sustainable under pressure.  I don’t force athletes into one model.  I help them discover their own — so they can compete with confidence, knowing their best is built on their unique strengths.
